All right, Andrew, that's a fair cop. (And thanks for providing a LL viewpoint on the issue). This was just one of my concerns about what the Linden Prize is actually going to be awarded for, and, until I see some prizes actually awarded, I'm going to reserve judgement. I would just urge LL not to let its political biases, or the political biases of its employees, influence the choice of who gets the awards.

I don’t think “improve the human condition” is a code phrase for “advance liberal causes”. This SF Chronical article was recently submitted on internal LL mailing lists as evidence on how SL may be improving the human condition: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/11/LVL211GP5C.DTL

If you were to ask someone at LL what they thought “improving the human condition” means I suspect many would list more general things such as: allowing people to communicate in ways that were not previously possible, enabling new ways to educate, and opening new economic possibilities.

Excuse me…. But is “first life” not already under stringent rule of Neocon?

Schools refusing to teach evolution.
States outlawing sex toys.
Wholesale wiretapping.
Blurring of the lines between church and state. Thought-crime brigades.
Self-pardoning administration.

Can we _please_ have a spot to hide from that for a bit? Even if it is just virtual? Pretty please?

I don’t think live voice will be that big of a deal, if people are able to place software filters in between to modify the audio. It might be a lot of fun to be able to adopt a chipmunk voice or a basso profundo at the touch of a button.

It's politicians of all stripes that can be an issue for SL. Remember, Mark Kirk, the representative that I explicitly linked under "certain asshats" in the text, is Republican...and the GOP, or rather its religious-right contingent, has historically been more into attempting to legislate morality. The liberal connection I see is mainly in the issue of the Linden Prize. I can't help but think that that is, at least in part, LL's attempt to curry favor with a potential Obama Administration. And, anyway, I'll believe it's non-partisan when I see a Linden Prize awarded for the promotion of a conservative cause. But it may mean very little anyway.

it seems to me kind of silly to claim that the Democratic party is to blame for the changes Linden Lab is seemingly making. I seem to recall that John Edwards was called on by Fox News cominator Bill O’Reily to close down his SL headquarters because it was close to a Brothel. It is common knowledge that Pornography is a target of many on the right as well as those on the left. Linden Lab will live with the consequences of their actions, including losing the concept of a world built by it residents. IMHO they should stick to the current system of PG and Mature, and they should be seperated. After reading some of the History of SL O find it hard to belive that any radical changes planed would stick.

Lindens and others are just plain silly when talking about voice, 3D camears and scanned avatars which brings “more realism”. Actually, it is sad that they are so unfamiliar with virtual worlds. Crappy realism they try to make is not making VW’s good. VW’s are virtual! If you need reality, it is just on the opposite side of your monitor. Learn that already. And start making a world that is live, vivid and effective (for fun, biz, networking, whatever).
